ED Treatment

The best treatment for impotence depends entirely on the cause of the complaint, and is best determined by a medical professional. Most of the impotence treatments will work only temporarily – i.e. allowing the man to achieve an erection, but not curing the underlying complaint – but erectile dysfunction brought on by a medical condition may be cured completely.

Impotence as a result of inadequate testosterone levels is perhaps the easiest to permanently cure, and a doctor will simply prescribe testosterone supplements.

PDE5 Inhibitors are popular treatment for erectile dysfunction, and Viagra is the best known of these drugs. The PDE5 Inhibitors work by replacing the cyclic GMP in the body with themselves, easing the relaxing of muscles within the arteries of the penis which causes blood flow to increase and results in an erection. Viagra (and other sildenafil-based drugs) are incredibly popular and widely available, having hit the intenational press after their development in the 1990s.

The vacuum pump is another option, and works by helping the development of an erection. A suppression ring is then fitted around the base of the penis to maintain the erection. Although the vacuum pump is a popular and easy treatment, most users report that the erections developed are smaller and weaker than those of normal arousal.

Some men choose surgical intervention as a treatment for a vascular condition, and this is the way in which anatomical structures, nerves and blood supply can be investigated and repaired. Another extreme measure that many men opt for is implants. Implants can be inflatable or rigid, but are costly and irreversible.

There are a variety of other treatments on the market, some of them incredibly controversial. There are also 'herbal remedies' and placebo treatments, some of which have been criticized by various medical authorities for profiting dishonestly from a distressing medical condition.
